IMPORTANT DAYS
International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1
i. Every year 1st October is observed as International day of Older Persons (IDOP). The significance of Day is to raise awareness about issues affecting the elderly and to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.  This year, the theme is “Take a Stand Against Ageism.".

ii. The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 each year. On December 14, 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons as recorded in Resolution 45/106. The holiday was observed for the first time on October 1, 1991.
NATIONAL
PM to sign declaration for a clean India today
i. Ahead of the second anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission on October 2, Prime Minister NarendraModi will sign a declaration reiterating the commitment to ensure Open Defecation Free and Clean India.
ii. Modi will inaugurate India Sanitation Conference (INDOSAN) on Friday and address Chief Ministers, Ministers, elected representatives of people, District Collectors, Municipal Commissioners of 500 Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) cities and other stakeholders.
iii. The Prime Minister will also honour as many as 11 individuals and organisations who have contributed towards generating awareness about sanitation.
Swachh Bharat Mission envisages construction of 1.04 crore individual household toilets in all the 4,041 statutory cities and towns besides 5.08 lakh community and public toilets and 100 per cent door-to-door collection and scientific disposal of solid waste at a cost of Rs.62,009 crore.
India Sanitation Conference in New Delhi.
i. The Prime Minister NarendraModi delivered the inaugural address at INDOSAN the India Sanitation Conference in New Delhi.
ii. The Prime Minister emphasized that cleanliness is not something to be achieved by budget allocations. It is rather, something that should become a mass movement.
Swachh Bharat Mission envisages construction of 1.04 crore individual household toilets in all the 4,041 statutory cities and towns besides 5.08 lakh community and public toilets and 100 per cent door-to-door collection and scientific disposal of solid waste at a cost of 62,009 crore.
iii. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Gujarat, Odisha and Telangana will be given monetary incentive for progress in urban reforms.
Tamil Nadu Tops in Urban Reforms
i. 19 States and the Union Territory of Chandigarh were rewarded with performance incentive for promoting urban reforms under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) during 2015-16.
ii. While Tamil Nadu topped the list of performing States, Chandigarh headed the list of Union Territories. Minister of Urban Development ShriM.Venkaiah Naidu felicitated the lead performers with mementoes and cheques during INDOSAN Conference in New Delhi.
iii.The focus of reforms during 2015-16 was on e-governance, Double Entry Accounting, collection of user charges and municipal taxes, water and energy audit, single window clearances and the focus of reforms during 2016-17 is online building permissions in all the 53 million plus cities, replacement of old water pump sets with energy efficient ones, reuse of treated water and urban flooding mitigation planning.
iv. Rs.400 cr was earmarked for reform incentive during 2015-16. 23 States/UTs applied to the Ministry of Urban Development. After verification of claims States/UT scoring 70% marks were identified for giving reform incentive. Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir and A & N Islands could not qualify.
Tax Incentives to Andhra Pradesh Districts
i. Under the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act, 2014 the Government of India is extending special assistance to four districts of Rayalseema and three districts of North coastal Region of Andhra Pradesh.
ii. To further boost the industrial activities, the CBDT has notified these seven districts for availing tax incentives under section 32(1)(iia) and section 32AD of the Income-tax Act.
iii. Accordingly, any manufacturing undertaking set up during the period from 01.04.2015 to 31.03.2020 in these districts of Andhra Pradesh is eligible for 15% of higher additional depreciation and 15% of investment allowance on the cost of plant and machinery acquired by it during the said period.
iv. The 7 districts of Andhra Pradesh notified as backward areas are: Anantapur,  Chittoor, Cuddapah, Kurnool, Srikakulam, Vishakhapatnam Vizianagaram
Rs.65,250cr Declared Under Disclosure Scheme
i. More than 64,000 people declared hidden assets worth Rs 65,250 crore availing the ‘Income Disclosure Scheme (IDS). 64,275 people revealed assets under the IDS, which allowed people to legitimize concealed income by paying 45 percent tax.
ii. At 45 percent, the government will earn about Rs 30,000 crore from income taxes—more than two-thirds the annual budget of Rs 38,500 crore set aside for the rural job guarantee scheme MGNREGA budget.
iii. The IDS began on June 1 and ended September 30 midnight, and declarants can pay their taxes by December 31. A similar scheme last year allowing people to declare secret overseas assets fell short of expectations, with fewer than 700 people declaring foreign income and paying Rs 2,500 crore in taxes.
iv. A 1997 amnesty scheme called the Voluntary Disclosure of Income Scheme (VDIS) yielded Rs9,760 crore in taxes to the government.
Govt will need 32yrs to build 2.3L toilets in Varanasi
i. According to a study by Delhi-based think tank 'Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the government will need 32 more years to build 2.3 lakh toilets in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi. The study made the conclusion based on the current rate of building toilets.
ii. Notably, the Centre has set October 2019 as the target for building 2.3 lakh toilets in Varanasi.
INTERNATIONAL
International Summit on Medical Value Travel
i. Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India is now organizing the second edition of ‘Advantage Health Care India 2016 (AHCI 2016)’, an International Summit on Medical Value Travel with the aim of ‘Promoting Healthcare Services Exports from India’, scheduled from 3 – 5 October, 2016 at India Expo Centre & Mart, Greater Noida.
ii. AHCI is an initiative of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and Service Export Promotion Council (SEPC).
iii. AHCI is the first ever International Summit on Medical Value Travel being organized in India for promoting services exports from India, and will bring together stakeholders from 67 countries, first such initiative in the Indian Subcontinent.
London launches 'Shut Up' Tube Chat campaign
i. London commuters have launched a 'Shut Up' Tube Chat campaign to discourage fellow passengers from interacting with them on the London underground.
ii. The Shut Up Tube Chat badges say, "Don't even think about talking to me!" The campaign is a response to the 'Tube Chat' campaign encouraging interaction between commuters on the London underground.
BANKING NEWS
India's forex reserves rise $1.17 bn to $370.77 bn
i. The country’s forex reserves rose by $1.17 billion to reach $370.77 billion during the week ended September 23, aided by a rise in foreign currency assets, the RBI data showed.
ii. Foreign currency assets, which constitute the biggest share, rose $1.17 billion to $345.24 billion. Meanwhile, gold reserves remained unchanged at $21.64 billion while India’s special drawing rights fell $1 million.
RBI sets govt's temporary borrowing limit at INR 25k cr
i. The Reserve Bank of India has set the ‘ways and means advances’ (WMA) limit for the central government at INR 25,000 crore for the October-March period.
ii. WMA are advances given by the RBI to the government to meet temporary mismatches in the receipts and payments. However, the RBI retains the flexibility to revise the limits in consultation with the Centre.
BUSINESS NEWS
Indians to spend INR 25k cr in festivals: Assocham
i. Consumers in India are expected to spend INR 25,000 crore this festive season, a rise of 25%, as against INR 20,000 crore spent in the year-ago period, a study by industry body Assocham said.
ii. Based on interactive surveys, Assocham further predicted the festive season starting with Navratrion Saturday will possibly register the highest-ever purchase rate per minute for e-commerce companies.
AGREEMENTS & MoUs
Puducherry Joins Regional Connectivity Scheme
i. Civil Aviation Ministry, Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Puducherry government has signed a pact for the proposed Regional Connectivity Scheme(RCS).
ii. Puducherry has formally agreed to provide the concessions required from the state governments under the RCS.
iii. The ministry has already signed MoUs with various states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh for implementation of RCS.
The government expects the first flight under RCS, which is in advanced stages of finalisation, to take off in early January 2017.
India, Japan to sign nuke cooperation deal in Nov
i. India and Japan are likely to sign a civil nuclear cooperation pact in November during PM NarendraModi’s visit to Japan, a report stated on Saturday.
ii. Japan has been demanding additional non-proliferation guarantees from India before exporting nuclear reactors.
The two countries have decided that Japan would halt cooperation immediately if India conducted a nuclear test, the report added.

Power Finance Corporation Gets New MD
i. Rajeev Sharma has taken over as the Chairman and Managing Director of state-run Power Finance Corporation (PFC).
ii. Sharma succeeds M K Goel who retired on September 30, 2016 on attaining the age of superannuation. Prior to joining PFC, Sharma was the CMD of Rural Electrification Corporation (REC).
iii. Sharma holds B Tech (Electrical) and Masters Degree in engineering from IIT Roorkee and also an MBA degree from FMS, Delhi University.
SBI chief Bhattacharya's term extended till Oct 2017
i. State Bank of India chief Arundhati Bhattacharya's term has been extended till October 2017, Finance Minister ArunJaitley announced on Saturday.
ii. Bhattacharya's term was to end next week. The Finance Ministry seeks continuity in India's biggest bank's leadership as it merges with associate units.
The government reportedly plans to fix SBI chairman's tenure at five years, against three at present.
Jammu Kashmir Bank Gets New Chief
i. Parvez Ahmad will take charge as the next Chairman-cum-Chief Executive Officer of Jammu and Kashmir Bank on October 6. Parvez Ahmad, who will replace Mushtaq Ahmad.
ii. RBI has approved the appointment of Parvez Ahmad as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of J&K Bank for a period of three years with effect from October 6, 2016.
iii. Jammu and Kashmir government controls more than 50 per cent of the shares of the bank.

Doon’s KendriyaVidyalaya awarded for being cleanest school
i. Dehradun's Kendriya Vidyalaya FRI was on Friday awarded by PM NarendraModi as the cleanest school in the country. The school encourages waste management and recycling and 60% of its premises has greenery.
ii. Moreover, regular discussions on cleanliness are held in the school. The school has won this award amongst all schools under the government sector.
St+Art India Festival begins in Bangalore
i. The St+Art India Festival begins in Bangalore today, with an aim to create art in public places across the city and make it accessible to a wider audience.
ii. Street artists from India and abroad are participating in the month-long festival, which will also feature live music events and workshops. The festival is set to be held in Hyderabad next month.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
India's 'biggest' spectrum auction begins
i. India's biggest auction of telecom spectrum kicked off today with seven operators in fray for a total of around 2,354 MHz across seven bands.  The bands are 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300 and 2500 MHz. Telecom Ministry has said, the availability of such a large quantity of spectrum will give a fillip for Digital India programme.
ii. It will allow telecom operators to purchase spectrum at par with international holding values and end spectrum shortage. India's biggest telecom players BhartiAirtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and new entrant Reliance JioInfocommare amongst seven companies that are participating in bidding process.
iii. Other bidders include Reliance Communications, Aircel and Tata Teleservices. This is the first time radiowaves in 700 Mhz band has been put up for auction and it is priced at 4 lakh crore rupees at the reserve price.

Rani becomes 1st Indian woman to cross 60m in javelin
i. Javelin thrower Annu Rani broke her own national record to become the first Indian woman to cross the 60-metre mark, throwing 60.01 metres at the 56th Open National Athletics Championships in Lucknow.
ii. Annu, a bronze medal winner at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, bettered her previous record of 59.87 metres, set in July in Hyderabad.
Petra Kvitova Won Wuhan Open
i. Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova won her first WTA title this year as she beat DominikaCibulkova of Slovakia at the Wuhan Open by 6-1, 6-1. With the win, the Czech will move up to No. 11 in the rankings after coming into the tournament at No. 16, which was her lowest ranking since May 2011.
ii. Kvitova, who has won at least one tournament every year since 2011, improved to 5-2 against her 10th-ranked Slovak opponent. It was the first meeting between the two players in more than two years. Fifth-seeded BethanieMattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova defeated third-seeded SaniaMirza and BarboraStrycova 6-1, 6-4 to win the doubles title.
OBITUARY
Scottish boxer passes away after bout
i. Scottish boxer Mike Towell passed away after his eliminator fight for the British welterweight title against Dale Evans on Thursday.
ii. The 25-year-old had been complaining of migraines before the fight. He suffered severe bleeding and swelling to his brain during the bout.
iii. Towell was taken to the hospital where he passed away 12 hours after being taken off life support.
