Thaaliku Thangam Scheme of TN

i. Tamil Nadu government has allotted Rs 204 crore for ‘Thaaliku Thangam’ (Gold for Mangalsutra) scheme for the year 2016-17 to benefit 12,500 women.

China, third country to win more than 100 gold medals in Paralympics


China became only the third country to win more than 100 gold medals at a single edition of the Paralympic Games 2016.

Seven of those came in athletics with another two each in table tennis and swimming as China ended the day with 105 gold, 81 silver and 51 bronze medals.

Lt Gen Surinder Singh takes charge of Western Command


Lt Gen Surinder Singh today took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command. He also met the senior staff at the Headquarters and took stock of the situation. 

Lt Gen Surinder Singh was commissioned in 1979 into the Second Battalion, The Brigade of the Guards, an elite Infantry regiment. 

In his illustrious career, the General has held prestigious commands, staff and instructional posts. He is a graduate of the British Army Command Staff College, Army War College and the National Defence College.

US Scientists successfully grow three-dimensional lungs in lab using stem cells



Scientists in the United States including those of Indian origin have successfully grown three-dimensional (3D) lungs in the lab, using stem cells. The 3D lungs or organoids was created by coating tiny gel beads with lung-derived stem cells and then allowing them to self-assemble into the shapes of the air sacs found in human lungs.
