KV Chowdary appointed as new Central Vigilance Commissioner


  • President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed KV Chowdary new Central Vigilance Commissioner.
  • He was appointed by President on the recommendation of Select committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comprising of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh as well as Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge.
  •  He is 1978-batch IRS officer of the Income Tax cadre. He also had served as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), an apex authority of the Indian Income Tax department.
  • Prior to this appointment Mr. Chowdary was working as the adviser to the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team which is probing black money cases.

Barcelona FC wins 2015 UEFA Champions League troph


  • Barcelona FC has won 2015 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League trophy for the fifth time.
  • In the summit clash played at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany they defeated Juventus FC by 3-1 goals.
  • Ivan Rakitic had first scored goal for Barcelona in the fourth minute and later Luis Suárez restores at 68 minute and Neymar scored the goal in extra time. Earlier, Barcelona FC had won UEFA Champions League trophy in 1992, 2006, 2009 and 2011,

  • Kotak Mahindra Bank and ING Bank have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for exploring opportunities arising from cross-border business, investment and trade flows across various regions, including Europe.
  • It was signed between the two parties and covers an array of co-operation in various areas such as trade remittances, finance.

Nitin Gadkari inaugurates first Oil Spill Response Centre for Mumbai & JNPT Harbour


  • India’s first of its kind Tier-I Oil Spill Response Centre (OSRC) for Mumbai Port Trust (MBT), Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and ONGC’s facilities at Nhava and Uran was inaugurated on 5 June 2015.
  • It was inaugurated by Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari to tackle pollution and oil spills in and around Mumbai.

MERS claims two lives in South Korea


  • Two people have died of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea making it country’s first fatalities from the disease.
  • The first victim was a 58-year-old woman who had contact with the original case, a South Korean who visited the Middle East and second one is of a 71-year-old man.
  • So far, 25 confirmed cases of MERS virus have detected in South Korea and around 680 people who might have come into contact with the infected patients, have been placed in isolation.

o    Sweden, a key member of the MTCR, has expressed support for India’s claim to permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and membership of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).
o    This support was conveyed to President Pranab Mukherjee, who is in Stockholm on a state visit, the first-ever by any Indian head of state, bySwedish Prime Minister Stefen Lofven who called on him along with his cabinet colleagues.

o    India and Sweden today signed six agreements to enhance bilateral co-operation between the two countries .

Pinaka Mark-II rockets successfully tested at Pokhran

Advanced version of indigenous Pinaka mark-II rockets were successfully tested on 30 May 2015 in Pokhran field firing ranges in Rajasthan.
They were test-fired using a multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL). In the test six rounds were successfully tested which had hit the target situated 53 kms from the firing point.
The MBRL version of Pinaka has high operational mobility, flexibility and accuracy which is capable of acting as a force multiplier and has been developed to supplement artillery guns.
